Introduction. Adolescence is a key stage for the acquisition of addictive behaviors. The objective of this research was to determine and measure the prevalence of addictive substances use in adolescents in order to assess the magnitude of the problem. Population, materials and methods. Students from 5 schools belonging to different socioeconomic strata were studied. A self-administered and anonymous transversal survey was used. The pre-codified questionnaire included demographic, socio-economic and cigarette, alcohol and drug intake variables. The program EPI INFO6, X² tests, Fisher and Kruskal Wallis (95% IC) H tests were applied. Results. About 28% of the students smoked cigarettes, with no difference regarding sex or social strata. A difference with regards to age was shown. The lower social stratum adolescents smoked in similar proportions, independently of sex and age. The higher social stratum started smoking later in life and the amount of cigarettes consumed was higher than the respective total average. Adolescents of both genders from the lower social statum started at a younger age but smoked a lower number of cigarettes. Seventy percent of the sample population tried to quit smoking, half of them failed. Smokers had a higher preference for alcohol and drugs than nonsmokers did. Near 35% of the sample population consumed alcohol. Males from both the lower and higher strata consumed alcohol in higher proportions. No difference regarding age or sex was shown. Drug prevalence varied between 0 to 11.7%. Conclusion: High prevalences of tobacco, alcohol and drugs use were detected.

Introducción. La adolescencia es la etapa clave para la adquisición de conductas adictivas. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue determinar las prevalencias del consumo de sustancias adictivas en este grupo para medir la magnitud del problema. Población, material y métodos. Se estudiaron los alumnos de 5 escuelas de distintos niveles socioeconómicos. Se efectuó una encuesta transversal con un cuestionario precodificado, autoadministrado y anónimo, con variables demográficas, socioeconómicas y de consumo de cigarrillos, alcohol y drogas. Se usó el programa EPI INFO6, y las pruebas de X², de Fisher y H de Kruskal Wallis (95% IC). Resultados. El 27,7% dijo consumir cigarrillos, sin diferencias entre sexos ni estrato social, pero sí por edad. En el estrato bajo se fumaba en proporciones similares, sin diferencias entre edades o sexos. En el estrato alto comenzaron a fumar más tardíamente y más cigarrillos que los respectivos promedios totales; en el bajo, el comienzo fue más precoz (en ambos sexos), pero fumaban menos. El 70% intentó dejar de fumar, la mitad fracasó. Los fumadores tuvieron mayores prevalencias para alcohol y drogas que los no fumadores. El 35,5% del total dijo beber alcohol; haciéndolo en mayor proporción los varones y los de los estratos alto y bajo. En este último no hubo diferencias entre edades o sexos. Las prevalencias de drogas oscilaron entre 0 y 11,7%. Conclusiones. El estudio evidenció altas prevalencias en el consumo de tabaco, alcohol y drogas.

Treze comunidades de 7 províncias argentinas foram escolhidas para avaliação de sorologia como indicador da transmissão da Doença de Chagas. Das comunidades mencionadas, seis não tinham história prévia de tratamento com inseticidas e sete tinham recebido tratamento esporádico ou continuado. Vinte por cento dos moradores das casas de cada localidade foram estudados por sorologia. As amostras foram obtidas por punção da ponta do dedo e 50 microlitros de sangue foram misturadas com 150 microlitros de uma solução conservadora de glicerina a 50% em meio de cultivo, para serem estudados por hemaglutinação indireta, e imunofluorescência indireta. Nas áreas não tratadas a prevalência da infecção em crianças de 0-4 anos foi de 17,5% chegando a mais de 22% para as de 5-9 anos e a 33,3% no grupo 10-14 anos. A prevalência nas áreas tratadas e sob vigilância foi de 2.6% em crianças de 0-4 anos, 5,4% anos de 5-9 anos e de 6,2% em jovens de 10-14 sendo as diferenças entre os dois tipos de áreas estatisticamente significativas (< 0,005). Este estudo propõe a sorologia como um indicador válido para a avaliação da transmissão da Doença de Chagas em áreas rurais.

Thirteen communities from 7 Argentinian provinces were selected for the evaluation of serology as an indicator of transmission of Chagas disease. Of the communities appraised, 6 did not have a history of previous treatment with insecticides and 7 had received sporadic or continuous insecticide treatment. The inhabitants of 20% of the houses of each locality were studied by serology. The samples were obtained byfinger pricking and 50 fil of blood were mixed with 150μl of 50% glycerine solution in tissue culture media to be assayed by Indirect Hemagglutination and Indirect Immunofluorescence tests. In untreated areas, the prevalence of infection in infants 0-4 years old was 17.5%, reaching to over 22% for the 5-9 year old group, and to 33.3% in 10-14 year old individuals. The prevalence in treated and surveyed areas was 2.6% in 0-4 year old children, 5.4% in 5-9 year old and 6,2% in 10-14 year old youngsters. The differences between both areas were statistically significant (p < 0.005). This study favors serology as a valid indicator for the evaluation of transmission of Chagas disease in rural areas.

Estudou-se a dinâmica populacional e a prevalência de infecção chagásica de 352 cães vivendo em 108 moradias rurais infestadas por triato-míneos. A área foi dividida em três setores de acordo com suas crescentes distâncias em relação a um povoado urbano. Cada animal foi identificado mediante suas características particulares, e seus donos deram informações a respeito de seus hábitos. As prevalências de infecção foram determinadas por sorologia, correlação parasitológica-sorológica, percentual de traçados eletrocardiográficos alterados e o percentual de moradias com cães parasitados. A área rural mostrou um padrão característico de infecção por T. cruzi e observaram-se diferenças nos parâmetros de população canina em relação às restantes áreas: maior proporção de filhotes, maior população humana e canina sedentárias, maiores prevalências de infecção por xenodiagnóstico em cães e maior proporção de barbeiros infectados com T. cruzi nos cômodos da casa. Supõe-se que as características sedentárias da população humana desta área rural é fundamental para a oferta de sangue para as populações triatomíneas, e a elevada porcentagem de cães parasitêmicos dessa área contribui para o aumento de barbeiros infectados com T. cruzi encontrados nos quartos de dormir.

The population dynamics and the prevalence of chagasic infection of 352 dogs living in 108 rural houses infested by triatomines were studied. The region was divided into three sections according to increasing distances to an urban area. Each animal was identified by means of its particular characteristics and built, and its owners gave information about its habits. By means of xenodiagnosis, serology and ECG studies, prevalences of infection, parasitological-serological correlation, percentage of altered electrocardiographic outlines and percentage of houses with parasitemic dogs, were determined. The rural area showed a characteristic T. cruzi infection pattern and differences in the canine population parameters with respect to the other areas were observed: a higher proportion of puppies than adult dogs, a more sedentary population, higher prevalences of infection, as measured by xenodiagnosis, in dogs, and the highest proportion of bedroom insects infected with T. cruzi. It is assumed that the sedentary characteristics of the human population in that rural area impinge in the blood offer to the triatomine population, and the high percentage of parasitemic dogs of the area, contribute to the rise of "kissing ougs" infected with T. cruzi found in bedrooms.
